First, we finally finished planting our garden! Yay :) This goofy Iowa weather (aka rain/wind mix) has prevented us from even remotely stepping foot in the muddy mess Jason tilled up several weeks ago. Luckily this past weekend we got a few nice days to finish the project. Here's our garden in all its glory:
We planted; carrots, radishes, cucumbers, spinach, lettuce, green beans, tomatoes, peppers (cayenne, green, & purple), lemon basil, and purple potatoes. We've also got a rhubarb bush behind our shed and red raspberries the neighbors is willing to share with us. YUM! I cannot wait to harvest all these veggies and eat like one healthy mama this summer! Plus, I'm going to try to make baby Polkie food like my sister-in-law did for her son.
Radishes and beans coming up already!
We planted "Early Girl, Yellow Pear, Cherry, and Roma" tomatoes. Needless to say, plenty for salsa making and salads. :)
And Jason's potatoes look great! They came up a few weeks ago. He planted two kinds of purple potatoes (Blue Mountain and Purple Majesty) and I'm anxious to see if they taste different than your typical golden or russet potatoes.
My second update or "project" I've been working on is a maternity shirt to wear in all my bump photos. I found the idea on http://diymaternity.com/tops/how-to-make-a-maternity-calendar-shirt-with-miranda-of-one-little-minute/ (diymaternity.com). So, I thought I'd whip out one of the shirts I bought recently and give it a try. The instructions are on the link above so I won't explain in depth how-to but if you'd like to make one yourself check it out! It's a pretty neat site.
All you need is freezer paper, a pen or marker, computer printed numbers (size 110), a brush or sponge, x-acto knife, scissors, an iron, and some fabric paint (colors-your choice)!
I simply cut the freezer paper to the desired size, folded it into 8x5 squares and traced the numbers. Then, I used my x-acto knife to cut the numbers out. (Yes, it is time consuming...and yes, I made Jason cut some)
Next, I ironed the shiny side of the freezer paper down so the edges wouldn't stick to the fabric.
Note** Don't forget to put something hard underneath the part you're working on so the paint doesn't leak to the back of the shirt. (I almost forgot about this step!) :S
Then I dabbed the black fabric paint on. The tube said it takes 4 hours to flat dry but I put a fan on the lowest setting facing the shirt and had no problems. I did two coats of the black paint and one of the red slashes. All together the project only cost me roughly $10.
And here's the finished product! :)
We are 12 weeks 3 days today. Baby is roughly the size of a plum and will be a peach on Sunday! Amazing how fast they grow :) I'll post more about baby and mom next week when we reach the second trimester milestone.
Until then....Enjoy! :)
